Clip to ScrapBook
I agree with laura. My brother saw a program on TV one time with 18 month olds being able to point to parts of their body when shown flashcards with the words on them, like "nose" and the baby would point to their nose.
He started doing this with his 1 year old, and reads to her every night. Now, she can read books at 4, but she has memorized the "Whole" words in books- not phonics. Sometimes we put emphasis on phonics, when many children learn to memorize the whole word and not the sounds. I believe in a balance between whole word learning and phonics. I don't have any answers for you, except that
maybe the child learned whole words from being read to at home, and memorized what the words looked like. I would wait before refering him for testing. It is only first grade, and they will learn letter sounds quickly.
