You can find some good ideas at a site called 9/11 as history. They are not dwelling on the actual event, but rather on some of the things children need to do to help understand and go on--Feelings, What's so special about me, Real life heroes, etc.
Also, I found some good activities at crayola.com.
Our building is having an "It's Great to be an American" assembly on Wednesday. My class is making patriotic t-shirts to wear that day.
