Clip to ScrapBook
I have a niece who has converted to becoming a Jehovah's Witness, and she has explained some of the religion to me. From what I understand, they do not celebrate birthdays because all references to birthdays in the Bible
are negative. They do not pledge to the flag because they believe that God (Jehovah) is the only one they should pledge to. They can have parties and receive gifts, but not in connection to any holiday because they all have their roots in Paganism. I believe you should speak to this little girl's parents and explain what is happening. I have had Jehovah's Witness families, and they have
all stressed to their children to be respectful and stand during the flag salute, but not to salute or say anything. I've had children who were comfortable and confident in their religious beliefs, and those who hated their religion (some from the same family!) and the parents appreciated when I communicated concerns. I try to be careful and remain open-minded when it comes to religion. Who am I to criticize? Even if I don't understand it, or agree with it, I try to be tolerant of the beliefs of others. After all, religious freedom is one of the great things about our country.
