Voice Box

I use a voice box system in my room. In the beginning of the year we practice our voice. 0 in the voice box means no talking. A 1 is a secret whisper and so on up to five. (They like to practice the 5 because it is their recess voice) Anyway, I tell the students that if there is a 0 in the voice box they are not allowed to say anything.
This idea might be too childish for 5th graders but my 4th graders love it. It helps for them to know exactly what you expect. They like to put the numbers in the voice box also. So it is like a game to them.
If they don't follow the voice box rules we practice again to remind them.
I also do something like Rebecca was talking about for recess but I use the word BUGS. Each letter stands for 5 minutes.
