working late By too embarrassed

Oh man, did your words ever touch a chord in me tonight since I just got home from work myself. (geez, and here I am on Proteacher---can you believe it!!! ) I'm a veteran teacher (this is my 30th year) and in my building| many other veteran teachers stay late also. I joke with them that when we retire the evening custodial staff should give our farewell speeches. I guess the previous poster summed it up by saying we all approach the issues of planning/paperwork with our own individual style (some people getting the work done at school, some at home, some both places and truthfully, some not much | | at all). I think in this career so much is self-evaluative and ultimately we have to meet our own standards.I do like designing original materials of instruction and I also do a thorough job with the paperwork (I'm a sp. ed. teacher). Both are time consuming but I do get a sense of satisfaction from it. I've also learned the work is never truly over, there is always something more I can think to do. So I've had to learn to let it go and not worry about perfection I do indulge the "teacher" side of me a bit more at the beginning of the year, then make a promise to decrease the late hours at work and increase time having fun, etc. I do truly hope and expect that in time things WILL improve. You ARE building a repetoire of resources which will serve you throughout your career. As for me, I guess I better sign off now and do an exercise tape or something. Really, good luck to you, and to us all.
