One activity I do as a whole class activity I call a Word Splash. Using an overhead transparency, I make a large oval shaped 'puddle' using a permanent marker. Inside the 'puddle'I use a wipe off marker of various colors to write in words that we need to know. Then using notes and books, students select a word and give its meaning. I cross them out as they are given correctly. This is an activity to use as a review activity mostly, but I am sure if you tweak it some, you can figure out a way to use it to introduce the words also. What is nice is that I have the 'puddles' made up ahead of time (about 3-4 ), and using my very limited artistic ability, I have them colored and made to look more special. Then I can just whip out the words I need to review very quickly. Good luck!
