I assume from your screen name that you're teaching second grade. If your child has had some writing in her native language, you can try asking her to write something for you in Dutch. If she understands enough to do this, great. Otherwise, have her draw a picture. We always start with a picture of our family. The kids can label their Mom, Dad, brothers and sisters and themselves. You can also let her copy someone else's writing sample. This gives her practice forming letters and words, engages her in activity with the other students and will often lead to her picking up a word or two. Be sure you assign her a couple of buddies who can make sure she is where she is supposed to be. You'll notice her talking to the kids before she'll attempt communicating with you.
