You may as well tell now, because the cat's already out of the bag. Don't be surprised if the principal already knows when you make the announcement. Secrets like that just don't keep.Your annnouncement will go over | better if you make it clear to the principal that you've considered the burden you'll be placing on him/her (by using the word "burden" I don't mean to sound negative about childbearing, which is something I've done myself and is a lovely thing to do, but from a purely practical standpoint, it does pose a burden to any employer when an employee takes an extended childbearing/parenting leave) | | and assuring him/her about how you plan to ease that burden. For example, if you can definitely commit to returning next year, you'll get a better reaction than if you leave your return up in the air. "I'm pregnant, and here's when I plan to go on leave and here's when I will be returning and here's what I'll do to help ensure the sub is successful when he/she steps in to take over my class this spring" is much better than "Hey, guess what, I'm pregnant." Congratulations and have a great year and a great pregnancy! (Thank God I had my baby before I started teaching--my morning sickness was so bad I could barely drag myself out of bed, much less try to teach anyone anything!)
