class meetings
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
You handled this wonderfully. The only suggestion I would offer is that you really might want to consider having a regular time set aside for class meetings. Perhaps 10 or 15 minutes once a week to discuss situations that
come up before they become too big. Class discussion isn't a waste of core curriculum time. It gives students an opportunity to use higher level thinking skills, to learn to speak in a persuasive manner, to organize their arguments, to practice social skills like listening and responding, and to feel as though they have a vested interest in their classroom and their school. All of
these skills are part of most states' core, usually under headings like "critical thinking", "social studies" or even "language arts". I bet your kids remember this meeting for a very long time. And they'll also remember not to tell tales about what happened last year!
