A couple of ways

I have passes for both girls and boys bathrooms. If they have to go, they take the pass. I bought the passes at a teacher store and attached magnets to the back of them. The passes stay on the metal door trim when not being used. A teacher down the hall uses an idea similar to your chalkbaord idea. Instead, she uses a small white dry erase board. It cleans up a lot easier and can be put most any place.
