How about the True Adventures of Charlotte Doyle by Avi--pretty sure that's the correct title. The main character is a girl--since you're reading a book about a boy--who travels across the ocean on a ship manned by a horrible captain and some unscrupulous crew members. Charlotte has to work hard to survive--good book--all your kids will enjoy it.
