I, too, use homework folders, and expect the kids to bring them back and forth to school each day. We have nightly assignments in spelling and reading, then math, writing, social studies, or whatever twice a week. I also print up homework calendars, and the last thing we do together as a class is fill out all of their homework on that days date. Missing assignment notices go home on Thursdays, and are due back the next week or a zero goes in the grade book. this seems to work well, though I still have the kids who refuse to be responsible enough to turn in their work!
