I also use a timer sometimes. Another thing you might do is see if he has visited the optometrist lately. I have had three kids in the last year that had real eye problems that no one had seen before. They think since the child passes the school vision screening all is well. That does not test nearly enough. It is a thought for you. It really helped my students.
I also posted some other ideas in the post before yours on this very subject of slow workers.
