I am a 1st yr. resource teacher with a few years of familiarity in the school. I have another resource teacher to share , so that helps me a lot. The first thing you need is a book with a copy of every childs' IEP, in ABC| order with ABC dividers, then read each IEP and see what kind of services each child recieves ...how many minutes of what, which ones are Resource vs. speech or O.T. etc. THEN, get a school total class role (usually not available until the first day of school), Then, sort them out by classroom. This year we did the scheduling using a big chart and sticky notes. That helped a lot as we could | | see which period we were where. You will want to break it down by time period of teaching (we use 40 minutes). Assign each period to a teacher, themn go from there. We use inclusion for 4th and 5th gr. as well as pull out for tests. The teachers will inevidably come back to you with different times for pull out, but it's a start. If you pull out, I believe that resource is supposed to offer the second does of that subject. So, if you are pulling for Math, it can't be during math lessons. BE SURE TO SCHEDULE IN A PLANNING PERIOD, TESTING PERIOD AND LUNCH IF POSSILBLE. YOu may have to give something up, but try. You have to be very multi tasked and get a long with the teachers to do this job so stay flexible. But remember that when it comes to meeting the requirements of the IEP, you are the responsible one and have the last say. Good luck and have fun teaching the kids.
