4th grade?
By LindaR

Clip to ScrapBook
In CA, this is usually the grade that hits CA history. I taught 4th grade last year. My SS book had a lot of ideas (HBrace).

We hit heavy on the four regions, which made the study of Early American tribes easier, because
the regions affected their living.

You could divide your students up into the different tribes and have them determine from their natural resources what they have for trade with each other, because they need something the other tribes might have (for ex: mountain tribes traded deerskins and acorns for redwood canoes and dried fish).

They should then make a list....you could have

them send tribe reps. to a central meeting point in the class to negotiate trades, but the person who trades needs to discuss with his/her tribe first if that item is needed!

You could also pull in art...create pictures of pottery (after they've read about the pottery and how it was made)that were made by the Desert tribes.

I was able to bring a "suitcase" from our local museum that had artifacts from the different regions. There is a lot of narrative writing that can be pulled into this....

One last thing....Indian legends are great to read to/have read by the students. A lot of LA activities can emerge from those...
