My friend and I designed a unit for this. Here is just a few of the different things we did. We took plain manila folders and divided them into boxes for each chapter. Students had to draw a picture and write a one sentence synopsis of the chapter. Kids loved it! Then at the end of the book we show the old movie version of the story with Annette O'Toole. The kids are so disgusted with the adaptation that it leads to discussions of why books are better that movies. The kids then write their final essays on this. This year I am going to tie in the book Because of Winn Dixie. The have very similiar themes.
