What type of...

...measurement activities are you thinking of? Using rulers? weights? liquids?

To start your students out with understanding the importance of having a standard unit of measurement, you could group them into "societies."
They are to use the ancient system of measurement of using body parts (have a list of some of measuring tools.

Have specific things you want them to measure (the list should have various lengths....(desk, length of room, door, etc.). They are to record these things, using their created system of measurement.

Then tell them that they need to send a representative from each society

for a summit meeting to discuss their findings. Have them compare their notes.... it should be interesting to hear their frustrations about whose body parts they should use for the measurements, as well as how different their findings are!

You can then pull in a discussion about how important it is to have a specific system of measurement...quickwrite?

Brainstorm a list of things in today's world that would require a need for measurement (even the shoes and clothes they buy!). In fact, I'm not sure if there's anything in our lives that doesn't require some knowledge of measurement...

Hmmm...this gives me some ideas for more activities....
