You could also let them draw a grid on a piece of paper and play voc. bingo. Call out the definition and they cover the word that matches the def. you call out. As far as making sure they read the story...if we are reading together, sometimes we popcorn read. One child reads until I say 'popcorn' and call on another child. It could be in the middle of a paragraph or even sentence, and the next child must pick up where we left off. I also ask a lot of comprehension questions as we go along. You could let them do paired reading while you walk around the room. Pick a page from the story and have pairs read the page to each other. You could also ask them to write their own comprehension questions to go along with the story.
