Reading Goals--Heifer Project
By January Pietila

Clip to ScrapBook
I am looking at the Heifer's Project "Read to Feed" The Heifer Project purchases animals for families to begin farms in disadvantages areas across the world, in a "teach a person to fish" fashion.

My goal is to teach students
to look at those with less than themselves, and inspire them to read. So, I came up with the idea that every time a student reads a book I'd throw a penny into a jar. We will decide how much to save (different animals cost different amounts) and students will set goals of the amount of money they want to achieve for the project.

Heifer Project also has a Read to Feed program, in

which students collect sponsors and read for money. Since I'm in a 70% free and reduced lunch school, I don't feel comfortable with that, but am willing to throw in my own money for this instead of for stickers or licorice.

The website for Heifer Project is http://www.heifer.org/giving_prog/read_feed.htm
