Literacy Centres
By Gail

Clip to ScrapBook
Last year I had a class of 31 students and it was my first time using literacy centres during the guided reading program. I had 8 centres. Although our inservicing prescribed the groups be heterogeneous I just could not keep track that way so my groups were based on reading level. One of the centres used magnetic letters on cookie sheets to spell weekly word wall words. There was a listening centre. A snakes and ladders games but the students had to say the word wall word before they could move. I had a browsing box, independent reading, phonics activities and pocket chart activities. I also had the kids look through magazines for a specific word wall word and glue them onto a piece of paper.
