Congratulations! By Rose

Congratulations on your job! This is my second year teaching K and I love it! If you have any more specific questions you can email me but here's some general information. As far as reading goes, I've been using the "Building| Blocks" program in my K class and it is wonderful. You can buy the books at a teacher store which explain exactly how to teach reading in a very child-centered and developmentally appropriate way. If you are teaching first grade the book will be called "Four Blocks". It has been one of the most helpful books I have purchased. As far as centers go, I have full day K so I have | | 2 different center times. In the morning I have small group instruction time during centers. One group reads with me, another plays a review game with my aid, and the left over groups go to the listening, reading or writing centers. In the afternoon I make sure to give them plenty of free choice time for blocks, dramatic play, art and so on. There are tons of great websites for center ideas and classroom management ideas. I really like KinderKorner.com and I've also recently stumbled upon thevirtualvine.com and #####.com which both have great ideas. I hope this helps - it's hard to know where to start when there's so much to say! Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck!
