A friend of mine knew that her old principal was not a good reference, but obviously the districts she applied to had to call her. She brought up this point at the end of her interviews, so they would still consider her after speaking with the principal.

Did you feel your interviews went well and you left them feeling confident? Did you get a good vibe from the person or people interviewing you? If so, then maybe your references are not giving you a good recommendation.

I would call at least one of the districts that did not hire you and ask them why you were not selected. It can't hurt to be pushy... after all you aren't working there. You may find a reason you are being overlooked.
