HM
By Ruthann

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi
We also use the Houghton Mifflin reading series in our school district. Last year I taught a 2/3 grade split and this year I will be teaching 4th grade. The series is very comprehensive and covers way more than you
will ever get to or need to use. You can be selective on what activities you use, but be warned that each story is suppose to be covered over many weeks. Which in my opinion is too long for the kids to be on one story. Plain and simple...they get bored reading the same story for so long.

This is what I do and will do again this year. I assigned certain stories and a certain number of

pages a day, with practice pages as independent work. I then call groups probably once a week or so for comprehension and reading strategy work plus to check on their workbook pages. Then I also do guided reading with leveled books twice a week and Literature studies to supplement the basal. The HM series does have some good stories that you could also use as a guided reading lesson. I hope this helps some.
