When I first started using this book, pre website time if you can imagine it, my students wrote to Ms. Woodruff, 2 separate years in fact. She wrote back each time, with bookmarks, and updated info on the characters in this story. The characters are loosely based on sons, nephews, etc. It was really neat. We also did a rowboat writing activity about where in time would we like our rowboat to take us. Can't remember more, since I now teach a different grade level, but I do remember how much my class always enjoyed this book and how well it correlated with Am. History. Have fun!!
