You could use "Farewell, My Lunchbay A Chet Gecko Mystery" by Bruce Hale. The main characters are a Gecko and a Monckingbird. All the charecters are animals. Your students could make masks to look like the animals and paper feathers on a shirt for the bird. It is a funny, cute mystery that I think your kids will get a kick out of. I plan on using this book in my class.
