Using checks, too!
By LindaR

Clip to ScrapBook
I forgot the use of checks! Students at this age love to write out checks, so you can take advantage of their use in teaching/introducing decimals. In addition to the above ideas, have blank checks for students to fill out correctly. You can do this in a number of creative ways to tie into the ad and money activities. The main concept, though, is that students recognize/identify the "and" in the numerical amount and the written word amount. Also, that in the written word amount the cents is over (out of) 100.

Example:

Numerical amount $35.21
Written amount thirty-five dollars and 21/100

Fractions will be a lot easier later on when students get used to writing the numbers this way.

Hope this makes sense!
