I have found it helpful to start the year in 1st grade with modeling simple writing frames(Marlene McCracken has some exellent ones)during our shared writing times. Then I post the frames on large chart paper somewhere in the room or type them up and laminate them and put them in a 3 ring binder in a writing center where the kids can continue to refer to them during independent writing times. They love trying to come up with their own ideas and then sharing them with classmates.
