I basically use the rules as they are. However, you could allow the students to have more letter tiles, forget about keeping score, and have dictionaries handy just in case. For my kids, adding up the "triple word score" etc ... is a fun challenge, but this is not necessary to get the benefits of the game in literacy centres. As with any centre, I go through it with the kids and explain the rules before the kids are allowed to go to the centre independently. Hope this helps.
