YES! Picture books are perfect for your second graders. Like you thought, you need to have different levels of reading material for them. You will also want to have some beginning chapter books. Like the previous poster
said, have different types of reading material: realistic, fantasy, joke books, magazines. When we make class books, I add them to the Book Nook as well. We have done a "pet exchange" for several years and they love to look at the scrapbooks from the previous years.

Remember, you can use picture books with your lessons too! All grades can! You can use them for various skills.

They will love for you to read them aloud as well!

As for markers for your posters, I use my dry erase markers that I use on my white boards. You just use an eraser or cloth to remove--don't need water!
