Talkative Class during Groups
By Tabitha/5th

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 5th grade as well and they can get real talkative. One thing I do is while I am walking around the room checking on group progress I will tell the group or groups that are being to loud that they have one warning
and if I say that they are to loud that is the warning. If it continues then the group stops, cleans up, and copies my class code of conduct for cooperative groups 10-15 times. This usually makes them stop. If not then I take away recess until I see better behavior.
Before I do cooperative grouping I have them tell me what 5 codes of conduct should be expected by all when we work in
groups. We discuss them and decide as a class. Then if they don't follow them they copy them as many times as I say. I found that by having them tell me what they think is expected in cooperative group situations they tended not to break them as much. I don't mind a little loud noise as long as they are discussing the work at hand. I will close my door if they get to loud and then stop the class and go over the class code of conduct for cooperative work and try again.
Sometimes just taking recess away and making them walk in a large square instead of running works like a charm. I did do this with my whole class one day that got out of control. I only had to do it once more at the end of the year. Hope this helps! If you need any other help feel free to email me. I am always willing to help out a fellow teacher.
