novels
By Susan/MS/5th

Clip to ScrapBook
I start off reading 1 novel as a class, so I can model how I would like to see them do it. We survey and discuss what we think will happen - sometimes writing the predictions down in a folder specifically for reading novels. Then I read and let students volunteer to read a paragraph or 2. I noticed that if I do the majority of the reading, they tend to pay attention more. Then we do activities that go along with it. I get my ideas from the books by Teacher Created Materials. They have a small activity book with ideas for each novel (most of the ones that I know most teachers use). After this is done with 1 novel, I'll start literature circles and let them pick a choice of 4-5 books to read as lit. circles and do similar activities.
