Clip to ScrapBook
You are right that a lot of kids get bored with whole class reading. There are lots of other options including partner reading and guided reading. Using a text walk with information structured for the level of your readers and their anticipated needs is a good way to start students off on reading independently. As they read you can walk around and read with indvidual students, checking comprehension and assisting with reading strategies. There are many great books on guided reading. Most are quite overwelming but just integrate one skill at a time.
