I **love** Melanie's idea! Another one for me to use I taught 4th grade last year, and I had the kids do posters on our state's symbols (seal, motto, flag, bird, flower, etc.). I had pictures for them to cut out and color. This info. can be obtained from the encyclopedia (or internet). My students loved presenting their posters and the "audience" loved asking the presenters questions, like, "What is the State bird?" As an extra, I found the our state song on the internet and printed it out. We sang the song daily for a couple of weeks, as well as considered the meaning of the words (the music was played right from the website): http://www.50states.com/songs/
