class clown
By Peg

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Marissa. This might seem weird, but I once had a behavior expert come into my class and tell me that the way to eliminate the behavior of the class clown is to eliminate the reason for the behavior. A class clown misbehaves
for the approval of his/her classmates. So if the other students are not laughing, you can put an end to your troubles. I remind my students at the beginning of the year that when we laugh at someone's misbehavior we are encouraging that behavior. I then inform them that I will have consequences for people who encourage misbehavior in this way. I don't target one particular person
as the clown when I do this...just make it an overall rule that we do not encourage poor conduct. It has worked like a charm. The other students start to resent the clown leading them into conflict with the teacher, and ignore him/her when they are doing the wrong thing.
