theme related ABC dictionaries

Clip to ScrapBook
I do theme picture "dictionaries". We brain storm a list of words that go along with the theme. Then, I have each child illustrate an assigned picture on a small square of paper. They trim the extra white paper off.
Then to organize the pictures, I have 1 envelope for each letter. The children put their picture in the right envelope and do another picture as needed. I use colored construction paper folded book style. My job is gluing and writing. We laminate them and save them from year to year. (This way I don't have to do this activity for each theme...but it is available in the writing center)
I also don't fret about the letters with no pictures. Some are very simple, our Mrs. Wishy-Washy Dictionary only has about 10 words, but all the letters are still listed. We have one dictionary for each of the holidays or months. We also have made ones for pets, reptiles, farm, oceans and space.
