I have found the following to work for my fourth and fifth graders: I buy the cheap folders when they are on sale for 12 for $1. I buy them in four different colors, enough for each child in the class to have one of each
color. They are used as follows (colors are examples):
Blue - Work in Progess folder - stays on desk and contains all work in progress. Also includes weekly packets for Daily Language and Math. Work stays here until turned in.
Red - Reading Workshop folder - Used along with a 3 subject spiral and kept in a magazine box on a shelf, along with any books they are reading.

Yellow - Writing Workshop folder - also in the magazine holder, along with their writing journal.
Green - Science journal - kept in desk.
I also ask students to bring in 2 pee chee folders - one is their homework folder, the other is to hold loose-leaf paper. Also 2 3-subject spirals - one is for math, one is for reading. Other supplies are markers, colored pencils, ruler with cm/in, red pen, pencils, glue or gluestick, $4. for Time for Kids subscription, postcards and stamps for postcard exchange, $4. for planner, looseleaf paper, I'm sure there are things I am forgetting, but my list is at school. Hope this is not too confusing.
