I found out I was pregnant in Dec 98 and I think I just waited to tell the students until I started to show and they began to wonder and ask questions. I didn't try to hide it at all and when someone asked, I just told everyone.
I can remember them being very excited even the boys. These are 5th graders too. I was overwhelmed when they threw me a surprise shower in June with the help of teachers, principal, and parents. I had no idea what they were up to. It's such a special time. I say share it with them and enjoy it together.
Make sure you know exactly how your contract is stated for maternity. It's

different all over and it keeps changing. I wasn't clear and either were many of the people I spoke to. I didn't go back to work the following year since I was due Aug 29 and school started that following week. Plus, I thought it would be easier for the kids if they started with the sub instead of me. Our maternity leave is just made up from our sick time. Personally, I find that completely unfair. I went back to work after Thanksgiving and I had no sick time left and a newborn baby to care for. It was tough but we got through it. Good luck.
