Science Act.
By Kim

Clip to ScrapBook
I am teaching 6th grade for the first time this year. I am excited to try the following hands-on activity with my class on the first day of school. You can do this in small groups or as a class. You fill a styrofoam cup full of water until it has a nice meniscus. You ask the students to predict how many small paper clips it will take to make the water overflow. The students usually guess less that 20, but as you do the experiment you learn that it takes over 100! This teaches the children about misconceptions and how important it is to carry out an experiment in science.
