I don't know about your curriculum, but where I teach, grades one and two are very similar, just at different levels. For instance, the same math units are taught to each grade, but grade two just learns a little bit more advanced stuff. In language arts, most teachers have ability groupings anyways, even within a single grade. In science and social, you may want to consider looking into the "project approach" (www.project-approach.com) This way, you only need to pick one project topic that both grades can research and will cover outcomes for both grade levels. I teach in a school that focuses | | on differentiation which means that if a child is functioning at the grade 5 level in math (even if he/she is in grade 2)they learn grade 5 material. Sometimes I feel like I teach in a one room school house! But really, it is quite manageable if you look for connections between the curricula. Good luck! Technically, I teach 2nd grade (although to me that doesn't mean anything) so if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them. Good luck! PS last year was my first year teaching.
