If you are using a office 2000 program on your computer, and type in a colon and a parenthesis one after the other, the program automatically converts the two into a smiley face. At least that is how it works for me. Using an updated Word program will do the same. (maybe a 2001 copyright). Hope this helps. Maybe others do it differently.
