I know your pain!

I'm excited to see some of the solutions that other people post! This is something I struggle with as well (I've had up to 14 kids at one time). The teacher that I student taught with used folders with each student's individualized
work in it. I like things a little more hands on--for me as well as the kids. Sometimes I try a more "whole language" approach. For instance, we may read a story, and then while one group of kids focuses on the elements in the story, another group may work on decoding certain words, or on more basic comprehension. I do a lot of this in English. For our state standards,
the students have to write a personal narrative. Some kids are lucky to get a half page down, while I expect others to complete a story, with a good beginning, middle and end. Anyway, sometimes it works better than others. But it does help me to feel like I'm teaching a "class". It also seems to help build a community within my class.
