Oh I am sorry to hear THAT! Something I think you could do would be review basic phonological awareness,maybe starting with having them say thier names and something they like or don't like that has the same initial sound
as thier name;my name is Pat and I like pickles for example. You could extend this by reading some alphabet books (Animalia is wonderful) andmaking lists of words that begin with all the letters of the alphabet. You could extend THIS by having them draw or paint thier own ABC pictures of scenes using one letter sound ~ Mice munching M&M's for example. Time spent reviewing sounds of the
consonants and vowels will benefit both classes I'd think. Another thing could be to have them all bring in a favorite book from home and 'present' it to the rest of the class. This is good brainstorming for me as it gets me thinking about all the ways I'll start my year. I'll be in my same old room tho. Good Luck!
