reader's notebook
By J/IA

Clip to ScrapBook
I used a spiral last year with my fourth graders and had them glue sheets into them. This year I had them bring the pocket folders with prongs. I plan to follow the model in GRW, and actually mimic the notebooks the authors sell, but just have the kids add those pages as we cover the material in minilessons. I wouldn't recommend the spirals and gluing--some could handle it, but it was a struggle for a good portion of the kids who are still needing more structure organization-wise. To divide the spiral they'll use for response letters (I'd like a section reserved for group work) we'll glue in cardstock with a tab sticking out the top. That is my plan anyway!! Good luck.
