Advice

Clip to ScrapBook
First I would come up with a set of rules. I would keep this list as small as possible (I never have more than 5) and I would make them measureable/observable. That way there is no question about if someone is following
them or not.

I go over these on the first day. As a class we talk about what each rule means. I also have people model the rule in acceptable and unacceptable formats. We also talk about the importance of each rule and why the rules are there.

I also do this same thing with procedures. I model how I want them to be done. I literally walk them through everything.

For the remainder

of the first week of school I go over these things again though not in great detail. I repeat this as needed.

I also talk to kids about how to handle things if they get upset with another student, myself, or another teacher. We talk about how to approach people to talk about things that have bothered us. My kids are always allowed to tell me they disagree with me so long as it is a polite disagreement and they have a rationale to back it up.
