starting centers By Julianne

Another thing to remember is that you don't have to start doing reading groups just because your class is starting centers. I teach first, so this is just par for the course with us. We teach the centers one or two at a time, then spend a couple of weeks (or more, depending on the group) rotating and monitoring centers, correcting and reteaching behaviors before making the jump to doing guided reading during centers time. Since it takes us some time to evaluate students and set up reading groups anyway, this structured centers time isn't wasted. It also takes the newness out of the centers experience and allows the kids to think of the work they are doing there as routine. Hope this helps.
