first minutes of K

Clip to ScrapBook
Parents of kindergarteners may wish to come into class with their child. If this is the case you can have a large sheet of paper out for each pair to draw themselves. Parents first draw themselves and children draw themselves
next to parents. As the parent finishes their part of the picture they can say goodbye to their child and slip out leaving their child busy creating their own portrait. Keeping the portrait their parent created close during the day may alleviate some of the children's anxiety and remind them that their mom or dad will be there when they are excused.

If you wish parents to leave

their children at the door, put out several self-regulating activities for the students to choose from. Legos, crayons and paper, clay or playdough, books to look at, etc. Ask each child to choose a place to spend the next few minutes while you are busy meeting and greeting. When the last child has arrived you can begin your formal teaching time.
