You could also have peace lessons and discuss its importance and how it all begins with us. Work at becoming a peaceful class, and school community is a great way to start. You could read the poem A Crayon Box That Talked
by Shane DeWolfe, which could lead you to a great many days of activities. Please e-mail me and I'll send the link to this poem. I followed a suggested follow up activity and created Mrs. Gartland's crayon box where each student was given a photocopied crayon on which they drew as many of the things that they liked on the crayon and colored it their favourite color. Then each was places
in my crayon box followed by a discussion of RESPECT and how we must all try to be open and respect individual differences. It was one of the most rewarding lessons I did. As a follow up, I'd offer the students red, white and blue beads, along with the materials necessary to make peace pins or bracelets and they could offer these to the school community or as a reward to someone caught doing a good deed for another. Hope this helps!
