4th/5th combination
By Amie

Clip to ScrapBook
I taught a 4th/5th combination my first year too. As Renee said, some lessons can be done together. One good way to handle the alternating group lessons is to use an Independent Work contract. I picked this up from a friend who was a former Montessori teacher. It's basically a "big kid" version of centers. You right out a schedule of assignments for the week, based on the lessons you plan for each group. During this Independent Work time, you meet with your small groups to teach lessons and explain assignments. Because it includes many of your lessons, it can take a good portion of your day, but it allows to differentiate more easily.
