Grandparent's Day By Dee

My school honors Grandparents on a given day in September. All grandparents are invited to visit their grandchild's classroom. The student takes his/her grandparent on a tour of the school. After the walking tour, the students and grandparents are served refreshments in the school's media center. Our school is comprised of third, fourth, and fifth grade and has approximately 1400 students. Each grade is designated a certain time i.e. third grade(8:30-9:30) fourth grade(9:30-10:30) and fifth grade(10:30-11:30). Sometimes resource teachers act as surrogate grandparents but most of the time the students | | with no participating grandparents stay in the classroom and the teacher provides them with some kind of refreshment and free time. It really has worked out nicely and most of the time, students don't feel left out when something fun is going on in their classroom. Before my school starting doing something special, however, my partner teacher and I would invite all grandparents to our class. Our classroom would display all of our "Changes" charts(charts made by students that include pictures of them from birth through their current age). Grandparents and students would have their picture taken by us and refreshments would be served to all. Resource teachers were glad to act as surrogate grandparents.
