advice Jay probably won't heed

Face it, Jay. You do not have good classroom control. It isn't that others have good voice projection or an authoritative voice--actually go in and observe those classrooms from day one and watch the teachers establish, implement,
and CONSISTENTLY follow a discipline program. I have listened to you bemoan the fact that other teachers have good control because they have the best students or they are the principals favorites. In all likelihood, this is not true. Effective discipline and management take time, perseverance, and consistency, It sounds like you expected these kids to all fall in line the first
day you walked in the room. When that didn't happen, instead of seeking out a mentor or advice from others (admittedly, you came here to Proteacher, but you haven't accepted any advice, only criticized it), you immediately passed the blame to class size, special ed students, kids with behavior problems, lack of parental support, block scheduling, your administrator, floating from room to room--in fact, you passed the blame to everyone and everything EXCEPT you! Jay, every class has size, behavioral, and parental problems--so your lack of control cannot be attributed to those factors. Take a long, hard look at what worked for you in student teaching and subbing and I'll bet you find that because those kids already had a behavior plan in place and since it was consistently enforced, you were successful. The problem with your ninth grade class was that when you took over you probably assumed they had a plan in place and you made no effort to establish one of your own...I don't know, but the blame cannot be attributed to everything BUT you. YOU definitely factor into the negative year those kids had. Come back to this board with a new perspective--lose your whiny tone, eliminate your juvenile references to colleagues and students, and stop getting so emotional and childish when others "call you on the table" because of your posts. Be constructive instead of destructive--you will be alot better off for it.
